Understanding Different Types of Sports Flooring Material

September 30, 2024

Hardwood and Synthetic are two primary sports flooring materials on the market today.  Here are some main differences between the two:

Appearance

Hardwood flooring is known for its natural beauty, unique grain patterns, knots, and color variations.  Synthetic flooring can look similar to natural wood from a distance, but it’s easy to tell the difference up close.

Durability

Maple wood floors are the most durable and are best for competition basketball courts.  Synthetic floors are better for multi-purpose facilities.

Maintenance

Synthetic floors are generally easier to maintain than hardwood floors. Hardwood floors require more maintenance, such as recoating, and are affected by humidity.

Cost

Hardwood floors usually have a higher initial cost, but they last for decades when properly maintained.  Synthetic floors may have a lower upfront cost, but they may need to be replaced entirely when they wear out.

Refurbishing

Hardwood floors can be sanded to give them new life and look.  Synthetic floors cannot be refurbished or easily repaired, requiring a completely new floor if it gets damaged or you want a new look.

Each of these products has its place in the market and your facilities, so you must decide which is best for you.

You need to think about and remember what activity your facility will support and choose the best material for that purpose.

We at The Ohio Floor Company can help you find the best sports flooring material for your gym, practice facility, weight room, dance studio, or whatever sports facility you have.
