The Ohio State University Covelli Center is a multi-purpose athletic facility located in Columbus, Ohio. The facility is used for volleyball, gymnastics, and wrestling, which means that the flooring needed to be a unique system that not all flooring companies have experience with. The primary challenge with this project was that the subfloor needed special blocking that would protect the surface from the wheels of heavy portable basketball hoops — but also could be incorporated into the design. The second challenge was the high-profile nature of the facility. The Ohio State University is nationally known for excellence — which meant that this new floor needed to perform to their very high standards.
Gilbane Construction Company reached out to The Ohio Floor Company, knowing that we have expertise with this particular flooring system, and we were excited for the opportunity to help. For this 21,800 square foot space, we used two unique flooring systems: Connor Sports Rezill Channel 01 subflooring and Third and Better Maple Strip Flooring on the top layer. Fortunately, The Ohio Floor Company has years of experience with this particular flooring system, so we were able to install exactly the flooring that the facility needed.
The Covelli Center’s new floor looks as good as it performs. It is able to transition easily between multiple sports: volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling, and basketball. The subfloor construction supports the weight of portable basketball hoops, and the finished surface shines as the centerpiece of the facility.
